  Why Jackson County?
Why serve in Jackson County, Kentucky?  To better understand the region let’s look at some statistics:

People living in poverty:  Jackson County 28.4%
United States Average: 10.6%

Unemployment rate: Jackson County 8%
United States 4%
Median House Value: Jackson County $107,000
United States $400,000
Average Income per person: Jackson County $22,069
United States $63,800
Avg income per household Jackson County $41,410
United States $83,750
Opiod deaths Jackson County 60/100,000 people
United States 11/100,000 people

These statistics are common throughout the Appalachian region. The region was once the epicenter for coal mining, tobacco farming and logging. The coal industry was once a vital part of life and the economy in Jackson County.  Due to reduced coal prices, cheaper natural resources and federal regulations, the coal industry has all but disappeared from Jackson County.
At one time, tobacco farming represented over 33% of the local economy.  Tobacco farming wasn’t just a business, it was part of their heritage.  Due to government regulations and since the federal quota system ended, the large farms got larger and the smaller farms disappeared.  In 1992 there were over 60,000 tobacco farms in Kentucky.  In 2024 there are under 1,000 tobacco farms left in Kentucky.  The vast majority of those farms were in the Appalachian region, including Jackson County.
Due to the inaccessibility of much of the area, Jackson County is not seen as a good place for industry.  All of these variables add up to a county and surrounding area that is not an easy place to live.
But, if you ask most in the community, they wouldn’t live anywhere else.  Many of the families have grown up here and live on property owned by their families since the late 1700’s and early 1800’s.  Their culture and love for the Appalachians doesn’t allow them to leave.  It is a slower pace of life, a beautiful land and beautiful people.
